    This http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTAh7OPNC20 is surely apt?

    Lyrics are:
    I fall asleep with the TV on
    Wake with an ache it's another week gone
    And consider how my light was spent
    And where it was that the real thing went
    I asked a wise man for advice
    I told him once and I told him twice;
    My life is one long damage limitation
    He smacked me hard around the head
    He handed me a card that read:
    Work like you were
    Living in the early days of a better nation
    Living in the early days of a better nation
    Play that tune again! I cried
    It's dead and gone the band replied
    But as they slowly tried it through
    The hands remembered what they had to do
    Give it poke and give it licks
    The name of the tune is Laying The Bricks
    I Stood outside the Albert Hall
    And wept, and wrote upon the wall;
    Work like you were
    Living in the early days of a better nation
    Living in the early days of a better nation
    We take the water to the tree
    She says, Now do the same for me
    It takes your sweat as well as art
    To dig a channel for the human heart
    There is no garden of delight
    Unless you weed it day or night
    Don't leave your life a lifelong long vacation
    I hear her whisper when we meet
    And when I crawl between the sheets, she says;
    Work like you were
    Living in the early days of a better nation
    Living in the early days of a better nation

    As a refugee from London I also like this from Oysterband (nothing personal)

    As someone who works on the land I have a soft spot for anyone who sings about it.
    Here's 3 lovely tracks from Chris Wood.

    Very special stuff, in my opinion.

    As this thread mentions folk music a lot I would like to ask whether any consideration has been given to coordinating a transition presence at various folk festivals in the UK (and elsewhere).
    In our area we have Towersey Folk Festival on our doorstep and large crowds come every year, many of whom would be interested to find out more about transition and a good few already involved in it. Ideally we would have a lot of local support and get free stall at the festival to promote transition and perhaps lobby the organising company to be more resilience/sustainabiltiy focussed. Our group Transition Thame and District does not have the resources or support to do anything like that, but would it be usefull to hold a transitioners meetup at this and other festivals? The key point would be, how to put the word out. Many festival goers go to the same festivals every year and over time transitioners could network and possibly run stalls/events/transition music. Something for discussion at conference this year.
    Many people travel long distances to go to festivals which may not be in the spirit of relocalisation but is a current reality. One advantage of this is the spreading of ideas and inspiration - something we could tap into, and folk festivals do encourage individuals to make and appreciate simple acoustic music, dance and drama which is not primarily dependent on external energy sources. Many folk festivals (eg Towersey) invest a lot of time and resources into youth events (eg shooting roots) and this is an area where we would find fertile ground for transition ideas.

    I would be interested to know people`s thoughts.

    Hello Dave
    Glad to read your post. I suppose I may have been a bit free with my contributions to this thread. It’s purely because I see the folk scene as being a bit ‘ahead of the game’ as far as music and transition are concerned.
    I may be going to Towersey myself this year. (Probably going to Priddy, Chippenham, some of Sidmouth). I can’t tell whether it would be possible or worthwhile to organise a get together but I would be happy to participate.
    On-going communication through the web seems a good idea. The key points for me are:
    1. Culture, the arts, music – all these will change during energy descent. The importance of this is probably not sufficiently recognised.
    2. Some sort of thought (call it ‘visioning’ if you must) needs to be given as to the best directions of change (e.g. where should entertainment centres be?, what skills are needed?).
    3. We then need to develop the skills and resources required.
    4. existing examples of good practice are a good place to start.
    In short, much the same as working on changing food production.
    Cheers
    Dave
