    Greetings,

A loose coalition called 'Transition Birmingham' organised a well-attended showing of End of Suburbia on Thu 26 Jun 2008. About 50 people - mostly connected to existing 'sustainability' networks - came, and voted to watch the first 52 mins (stopping for the hydrogen section) before discussing how Birmingham and Transition.

About 20 people met again under the 'Transition Birmingham' banner on Tue 15 Jul 2008, as a working meeting. Two email lists have been set up - Transition-Brum-Discuss and Transition-Brum-News - with a total of nearly 70 subscribers.

There will probably be meetings every 2 weeks in Birmingham as people develop the Transition idea for this city. There seems to be an initial concensus that a Transition Hub supporting Transition Neighbourhoods is a good starting model for Birmingham.

The next Transition Birmingham event will be a Fundraising Social BBQ on Sun 31 Aug 2008 at the beautiful Martineau Gardens in Birmingham. Please email transitioncitybirmingham@riseup.net for more information.

    Best wishes to everyone.

Update: The group of volunteers facilitating the Transition Birmingham process are still working.

In October, we had nearly 100 people attend a showing of "The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil" and/or the talk the following week by Roberto Perez at the end of his 2008 UK tour. We now have 14 copies of the film circulating around Birmingham, with a number of house parties and local showings being planned for the New Year.

In response to popular request after the Cuba events, our next event will be an workshop to introduce permaculture to Transition Brum people, on Wed 14 Jan 2009.

You can find information at our interactive Web site: http://transition-brum.wikispot.org/

    Introduction to Permaculture

Felipe is going to run a Web of Life activity to help people think about ecological relationships - we will look at the links between different plants, animals and other elements of an ecosystem.

Barbara is going to bring photographs of some permaculture design projects which she has worked on.

I will bring my Earth Care Manual, a treasure-trove of information about building sustinable human habitats in the UK, written by leading UK permaculture designer Patrick Whitefield.

There will be a number of people at the workshop who can answer questions about permaculture - the ethics of Earth Care, People Care and Fair Shares; principles and methods; how Transition Towns has grown out of the Permaculture movement; and permaculture in practice, for example.

More ideas and volunteers are welcome!

    Sustainable Cities

Some very useful practical inspiration: http://www.sustainlane.com/us-city-rankings/cities/portland

"Portland's support of local farmers and farmers' markets; its explosion of green buildings and commitment to renewable energy, and its emphasis on mass transportation, including light rail and bicycles, shows that a city can not only be kind to the earth, but also flourish economically and grow by being green." --Mayor Tom Potter, September 2008

    Practical Permaculture

After an introduction to permaculture evening on Wed 14 Jan 2009, Transition Brum had our first practical permaculture session on Sat 17 Jan 2009. After learning a little about the allotment plot we were visiting, about how permaculture is being implemented there, and a little about soil sampling, we did some practical work on disuading bad neighbours. That is to say, we cleared a raised bed of creeping buttercup and grasses, then mulched with garden compost, wet cardboard and rotting planks.

Transition Brum now has two regular monthly meetings: Hub Second Wednesdays, at The Journey MCC; and Permaculture Third Saturdays, different venue each month. For more information, see our interactive Web site: http://transition-brum.wikispot.org/Contact

Yes we seem to be doing pretty good. Sewing & darning workshops have now started up, these will happen every 2 to 3 months, until everyone has learned all they want to know/all that I know, about sewing, darning, mending/making/altering clothes, knitting, even applique & patchwork if anyone wants to do that. I'll teach all I know & maybe we'll get some more teachers who know other stuff too? First one on Sat 18 April in Journey MCC 3 to 5 pm. This is part of the "Great Reskilling".

  8. I used to do slipper making courses for vegans and might think about starting them again next year. This year am concentrating on the basketmaking and the community cleanups, so no time really.

Diggerdave, could you drop an email to transitioncitybirmingham@riseup.net and we can talk about events in Acock's Green etc.?

I like the sound of vegan slippers, and community cleanups, too.
