  1. Hi

I'm currently designing a website for 'Transition Town Dorchester' and have found a hosting company with 100% renewable energy... http://hostpapa.co.uk/green/go-green.shtml

I think the internet is an incredibly valuable tool, but the internet uses a lot of energy.

Does anyone have any recommendations for:

    1. Solar panels to power laptops/ PC's
    2. 100% renewable internet service providers
    3. Anything else I haven't mentioned related to greening up the internet

    Thanks
    Steve

I am using Ecohosting http://www.ecowebhosting.co.uk/home. They have been very helpful showing me how to set up things. Their pricing is also very good.

They use tree planting to carbon offset their impact.

  3. Thanks : )

I've yet to find a hosting company that runs on 100% renewable energy AND plants trees.
If anyone wants to check out a '100% renewable energy hosted website' please visit: http://www.transitiontowndorchester.org

Has anyone got any recommendations for 100% renewable energy ISP's (Internet Service Providers) ??...

  4. Hi - anyone know a hosting site that is 100% renewables powered and offers microsoft.net compatability.

Our provider (aiso.net) does this but we need to find a cheaper provider!

One recent "Archdruid report" (http://thearchdruidreport.blogspot.com/2009/05/economics-of-decline.html) made some interesting references to the energy requirements of the internet and how the future for this technology is uncertain.

  6. Thanks for the link njwatts

The amount of energy required to run the internet is huge, sorry, EXTREMELY HUGE!

We looked at various internet hosting/energy issues for the Transition Web Project (on Wiser Earth), and I mentioned 'Desert Island Websites'
    ...which might look something like this? eg;

    1. http://www.raymears.com
    2. http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com
    3. http://hedgewizardsdiary.blogspot.com

    or this?...

    1. http://transitionculture.org
    2. http://www.beatlesradio.com
    3. http://www.howtomakecider.com

The internet is a really beneficial tool for Re-Skilling, but we could certainly do with removing some massively inefficient websites like perhaps? http://www.tesco.com or http://www.universalmusic.com or http://www.britishairways.com etc
