  1. I have great concerns about the national lack of training for sustainability issues. How are we to work together for a viable future if we don't put in place a network of training centres, get these topics on-line and run more short courses?

I have been running a Foundation Degree in Sustainable Land Management for the past two years - check out the |-- course description --| - and it has been doing well until recently.

The paradox now is that, as we move into a period of upheaval and change, such training is ever more vital, yet the number of applications has dropped away (and the rumour is it's the same message across many agricultural colleges). Does anyone have any ideas about how we might overcome this problem?

  2. I've noticed things have been dropping away in all kinds of ways and I don't think education's immune.
Little shops struggling / closing down, media industry plummeting, tightening of wallets, slower traffic...

(and it's not all bad)....Less consumerism, increased waste recycling, Quieter roads / Uptake of garden share, more cycling, more social interaction & networking

....just wait for the oil prices to rise again, then we'll be rocking!

This discussion may be worth moving into the whole Great Reskilling question. There's a group formed on |-- WiserEarth --| that is discussing this issue. We've had a development day and a visioning day, and there will be ongoing ideas and conversations about it.

  4. I learned my building skills by having a go while I had a copy of the Squatters Handbook ( later Alternative England and wales) or the Whole Earth Catalogue open at the relevant page.

Skills that have served me well over the years. But no one seems tobother now.
