  4. I am always on the look out for events within a handcart pushing distance of small heath. We seem to get invites to events across the country but not so much locally....Birmingham Basketmakers Coop.

Dear diggerdave, please tell us more - that sounds interesting! Is Acock's Green too far - are you happy to use the train or bus en route?

Come along for a little while and help out, pick up some tips and ideas on talking about climate change, peak oil and community resilience building ...and take in the fair :- offering organic & fair trade products, alternative energies & energy efficiency advice, waste reduction solutions natural/eco-friendly toiletries, cosmetics & cleaning products, recycled/eco toys, bags & gifts advice on all things green, clean and ethical, free vegan food samples and lots more...

    Redditch Green Fair

  7. No. Acocks Green is in handcart distance, even more so when I get the bigger wheels. I cant get it on trains or buses. Its a step up from carrying a pile of baskets around, so we have hopes. Its quite fun, going through the streets, it gets quite a lot of interest.

I do have access to a van about once a month by prior arrangement for events farther afield. Some of our other members have cars though, .
For big events we can do a display of country baskets - fruit , collection etc, and also a display of picnic basket production in Birmingham from 1860 onwards. But this comes with trestle tables, tenty thing and/or caravan, and takes a bit of organising.. Next one is Chatsworth Country Fair in September.

  9. I can circulate info, but there are a couple of forestry events over in the East Mids.
( basketmakers are very slow thinking and tend to plan a year ahead, its the nature of the beast i suppose)

  11. I've just found this forum and am watching developments with interest. I doubt I can make the Cannon Hill event unfortunately but would be interested to find out if there are any people starting to get involved in this in the Wolverhampton area. Im new to the area and am still getting settled into the place and a new job but from the Autumn may be able to get to more things. Best wishes for the events Saturday.

  12. Welcome. I have only recently found this place myself. I have to fight cynicism as well as laxity ( being one of those people who saw the light in September 1967 at the Roundhouse and have been running around ever since banging my head against various walls until about two years ago...now I am a follower of Jasper Carrot ---amble about with a stick sayin " I told you so!"

I think the important thing at the moment is keeping the communications going . There is a lot going on, but it is nice to hear about it all in advance.

Hello Biosensei! I can think of three ways immediately that you can find out what people are doing in Wolverhampton - contact the Transition Network office and give them your contact details, so they can put you in touch with any other Wolves people who contact them; Look for and start Wolverhampton threads on this forum; Ask around in your local area with groups like Friends of the Earth to see if people are already mulling over the Transition model.

Anyone is always welcome at Transition Brum events, too :-)

At the moment, the Transition Brum methods of communication include this Forum, our News and Discuss email lists, our Wiki: http://transition-brum.wikispot.org/Events_Board and http://transition-brum.wikispot.org/Contact are good starting points.

We meet every Second Wednesday and Third Saturday of each month at the moment, Wed 8 Jul at 7pm to get the Transition Brum Roadshow going (why not invite us to your neighbourhood) and Sat 18 Jul from 11 am at the Changing Lifestyles Eco-Centre to spread awareness of Peak Oil and socially just Transitions (return for a sustainable Big Lunch the next day if you wish!). Then we're visiting the most sustainable allotment in Birmingham on Sat 1 Aug.

More details at: http://transition-brum.wikispot.org/Events_Board and by asking through http://transition-brum.wikispot.org/Contact

  15. Litter picking is a good way of finding other acceptable thinkers, and find out which of your neighbours might be interested as well as t5hose that think you are a dangerous crank.
I am involved with cleanups of the Hay Mills parks on the A45, using the National publicity for the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, although littering here is purposeful conditioning rather than accidental droppage.. It is getting so bad now that some people think we are part of Small Heath, rather than being an independent township prior to th eencroachment of Birmingham ( being housing for rural worker on the Bordesley estate)
I have been doing informal cleaning of the drug taking areas and some poopicking, reporting to the Volunteer Park warden but this is the first time with some form of organisation. Next Monday is the Bus Stop area and the following Monday we are attacking the mound under the bushes where the shoplifters throw the coat hangers and stuff.
Its a good chance for a chat., but being realistic , I might be the only one there some times. well ...except for the dog.
The small parks are 20 years old now and I am trying to raise enough interest to have a birthday party to improve interest.... there is a litter bin tha the council have been promising to empty for some time but I hope that we can find som eother attractions perhaps a bit of guerrilla planting.
Does anyone know who wants a lot of drinks cans to recycle?

    Welcome, AbandonedBicycle.

Sorry to have missed you at AG Carnival, DiggerDave.

I've been doing a little freelance litterpicking around AG - but I've not yet teamed up with anyone else ...

Thanks Treaclemine - I'll keep my eye on the Birmingham activities!

  18. http://www.thebigtidyup.org/ will send you stickers, posters and such. I am getting some little leaflets printed off with times and places on, to stick in prominent places.
Acocks tends to keep itself in fairly good order, doesn't it.

We got to the Carnival a little late and could not convinc ethe dog to enter anything , it was all a bit bewildering for him. They have another dog show there in august, I might take a stand for the Basketmakers coop , and put on a leaflet display.

  19. Forgot to add. I have been looking at http://www.h-e-s.org/ with a view to seeing if it coul dbe adapted to a more business/works orientated area like mine.

  20. Thanks Diggerdave, abandonedbicycle, treaclemine... sorry for the slow response, I've been away - Permaculture Design course on Isle of Man - and will be in west Wales for much of August. I'll keep the 1 Aug allotment event in mind; I'm going to do some further exploration of this area in the school holidays, while I'm here. I've bookmarked the other events pages and will keep an eye on them. Autumn will be a better time for me to do a bit more. Meantime personal actions as I settle in are finding sources of more local vegetables than most places seem to stock - farm shops just outside Wolverhampton sound promising and may be bikeable from where I live. I'll look at the Transition Network and Permaculture.org too.
Cycling to/from work's good too and I'm trying to persuade others at the school that you don't have to be insanely fit or just insane to do this; lack of staff bike storage at work's an issue, as is a lack of decent changing/locker facilities, so I want to raise this at an appropriate and constructive time. I'd be interested to hear others' experiences of this, but perhaps this needs to be a separate topic?

  21. Well because of Swine flu consideration , we have stopped advertising our litterpicking, but still do it as and when. We may still have a picnic though. ( and a party for the unemptied litter bin's birthday.
I am seriously considering taking up a regular roun din th eneighborhoodm with the cart calling on flower shops to try and sell baskets and also including a couple of the local allotment areas ( what services to provide... I dont know yet although the cart has a sharpening wheel )

If you are north Wolverhampton then Essignton Fruit Farm is easily accessible - and depending on you cycling abilities, from most of the rest of the city too. If you find others let me know.

  23. Thanks, Abandonedbicycle Rob, as it happens I went there for a recce the other day, having just stocked up at another farm shop over at Perton (Bradshaws Farm Shop - 01902 844064), which I could also cycle to; it's about 5 miles from me. The Essington one is closer to me though. The quality and range of veg and meats is very good; I prefer to eat mostly veg but do eat some meat too, if it's local and decently treated... the smoked bacon's in the fridge!! :-) Quite a lot of the fruit is from UK, some imported but seems clearly labelled. I may try the PYO at Essington sometime.

Yes, we have been tempted by the PYO but then our allotment suddenly flourished!

Have you had any joy in finding any other Wolverhampton Transitioners? I'd be happy to meet up sometime - drop me a line at robrowlands@blueyonder.co.uk if you like? Then at least there's 2 of us!

  25. I have been told about this, and hopefully we be able to attend

    "BHAM ECO VILLAGE
just to let you know we are meeting to discuss how to put this into action on Sunday 4th of October at the Old Crown pub in Digbeth, Brum, at 2pm,
we have no solid plans and this will be the first proper meeting to discuss this project, there is no leadership as such and we want everyone involved to have their say,
that said we do have an idea of what is needed and where/how we want to do this,
hopefully at the end of this meet we will have a plan of action and people ready to put the gears in motion."
