CO-OPERATIVE GRANTS TO START TOWNS OFF ON CLIMATE CHANGE JOURNEY
The Co-operative is leading the way in the battle against climate change by offering towns and villages in the South West, assistance in taking the first tentative steps towards an oil-free existence.
The ‘Transition Towns’ movement has been gathering momentum in the UK, and involves pioneering communities making a concerted effort to reduce their carbon footprint and prepare for the changes which will take place following the demise of cheap (Peak) oil.
Almost half of the 65 official Transition Towns in the UK are in the South West and The Co-operative wants to encourage even more communities to follow their lead.
Co-operative and membership officer Pete Vallance said:
“From Totnes to Taunton and Falmouth to Frome, towns and villages are waking up to climate change and deciding it’s never too early to take action for the future. Peak oil is not about running out of oil, but it is about the end of cheap, plentiful oil and how our lives will be affected by this transition.
The Co-operative is committed to tackling climate change and since the South West is leading the way on the development of Transition Towns it makes complete sense for us to support the movement in any way we can.”
There are several steps on the road to becoming a Transition Town including the initial stages and the ‘12 steps’. To help communities along the way, The Co-operative is awarding grants of £100 - £150 to cover anything from organising a community meeting to developing an energy action plan.
