Hi everyone,
Very interested in transition towns...there are rumblings of a transition town Tabua. On saturday there will be the next permaculture network meeting at Quinta das Abelhas, watch this space for news about transtion town Tabua.

Taking transition to Porto in November with building a strawbale donkey shelter in coordination with an open space discussion on transition city Porto at Lipor.

Great work Annelieke with finding a permaculture site in the Botanical Gardens! Maybe we can do a strawbale course there.

And great work João for initiating transition town Pombal.

Big hug

Christopher

Dear Mandy,

Thank you for starting this forum. Lots has happened since we met this summer! We are about to start gardening in Coimbra's Botanic Garden within some weeks with the wish to grow like a transition initiative from here. A small summary of the project:

-----
Transition Coimbra - healthy lifestyle, healthy earth
Local food production as a starting point for redesigning lifestyles

Awareness about peak oil and global warming is increasing. It starts to be clear to a growing group of people that a move towards localised energy-efficient and productive living arrangements is not a choice, but an inevitable direction for humanity (Hopkins, 2008).

Plataforma Perma-D is a Portuguese network that explores how permaculture can be used to redesign our lifestyles accordingly. Permaculture uses ecology as the basis for designing integrated systems of food production, housing, appropriate technology, and community development. We focus on urban settings.

Based on the urge for ongoing support and training needed for implementing substantial changes in daily life, we have developed an idea for a permaculture meeting point in Coimbra, taking food production as a starting point for a joint transition process towards more sustainable lifestyles. It will be situated in the Botanic Garden, that offers facilities for workshops, gatherings and gardening.

The initiative for action should come from the person and/or community that wants to change. We will focus on inspiring, encouraging and training “on demand”, connecting initiatives and facilitating mutual support. By offering a method rather than a solution, we aim at empowering participants to not only redesign their own lifestyles, but also helping others in doing so. The meeting point will then start to function as a support base for dispersed initiatives in Coimbra and beyond.
------

We have presented our project at an international seminar on urban agriculture in Coimbra (September 23) and on a festival for alternative lifestyle (Artes da Lua de Outono) in Coimbra last weekend. The poster, which is bilingual, I will send to you by e-mail. I used the micorrhiza idea to show how we hope that local initiatives will pop up like mushrooms ;-).

More then 20 persons have already showed active interest and we can link our initiative to a small market (organic produce & crafts) that is being organised every Saturday in the Botanic Garden. The first gardening projects will be to start gardening, composting & rainwater catchment. The first bioconstruction projects will be a dry toilet, a small shed and a covered area for workshops and gatherings. As soon as we have started, we want to start a program with workshops, discussions, shared lunches etc.

Apart from local interest in Coimbra for the Transition Training there are representatives of the Municipalities of Lagos (Algarve) and Amadora (Lisbon) who would like to participate. I think we will soon pass the limit of 20 persons for the training. We will keep in touch to talk about the best location and other details.

This weekend I met João Leitão & João Gonçalves (your translator). We plan to keep each other updated about thinking & progress.

As soon as the Perma-D site is updated & we have an electronic meeting place for Transição Coimbra I will post links here.

Big hug, Annelieke.

*****************

Cara Mandy,

Logo vamos ultrapassar as 20 participantes ara o treino.

Hi All,

During the summer I gave a talk on Transition at Quinta Cabeca do Mato in Portugal. There seemed to be lots of enthusiasm for starting Transition Initiatives and I was wondering how you are all doing? Perhaps you can use this thread to let others know what is happening in Portugal.

There is now a provisional date for the 2-day Training for Transition course in April 2009. You can book onto this and find out more about the training on the transition town wiki.

Really looking forward to finding out what's happening.

All the best,
Mandy
