WHAT IS YORK IN TRANSITION?
York in Transition is a diverse group of individuals who share a common interest: To help groups of citizens develop resilience in the face of rising fuel prices and increasingly chaotic weather.
There is overwhelming scientific agreement about the problems that we're facing. Here at York in Trasition we don't have the solutions, but we are convinced that:
- change can be scary, but it is necessary
- if we wait for the governments (national and local), it will be too little, too late
- if we act as individuals, it will be too little
- but if we act as a community to solve our particular problems, it will be effective, it might be enough, it might be in time, and it could encourage the government to act.
We're following the Transition Network process (.pdf). We will:
- build awareness of the potential impacts of Peak Oil and Climate Change
- encourage a community-led process to build our resilience, and to drastically reduce the city's contribution to greenhouse gasses
- contact existing groups in the community for mutual support and encouragement.
- build bridges to local government
- nurture new Transition Initiatives in the city (eventually, York might have 15-20 autonomous Transition Groups working in various communities)
- form groups to foster community-led projects in all the key areas of life (food, energy, transport, health, housing, economics & livelihoods, etc.)
- seed projects that nurture community engagement, and help people understand the issues
- eventually, launch a community defined and community implemented, "Energy Descent Action Plan"
YORK IN TRANSITION STEERING GROUP
The Steering Group is evolving as the project develops. Our meetings are open. If you want to take a closer look at us or get involved in the work, then do come along to a meeting. Informal discussions happen in the pub afterward (!).
The next meeting of the Steering Group will be, 7:30pm Thursday 4 February, at The York Environment Centre in Saint Nicholas Fields.
GETTING INVOLVED:
Are you interested in helping? Many of our projects are looking for people to help - someone to look after our finances, people to help with one-off events, people to monitor and write letters & articles for the local press, technical people to manage our databases, contacts etc.
You don't have to have prior experience, just a willingness to learn. It's a chance to brush up on old skills you haven't used in a while, or branch out into something new that will look good on your CV.
