WHAT IS YORK IN TRANSITION?
York in Transition is a diverse group of individuals who share a common interest: To encourage community-led action to deal with rising fuel prices and the increasingly chaotic weather.
There is overwhelming scientific agreement about the problems that we're facing. Here at York in Trasition we don't have the solutions, but we are convinced that:
- change can be scary, but it is necessary
- if we wait for the governments (national and local), it will be too little, too late
- if we act as individuals, it will be too little
- but if we act as a community to solve our particular problems, it will be effective, it might be enough, it might be in time, and it could encourage the government to act.
We're following the Transition Network process (.pdf).
- We build awareness of the potential impacts of Peak Oil and Climate Change
- We encourage a community-led process to build our resilience, and to drastically reduce the city's contribution to greenhouse gasses
- We contact existing groups in the community for mutual support and encouragement.
- We build bridges to local government
- We nurture new initiatives in the city
- We form groups to foster community-led projects in all the key areas of life (food, energy, transport, health, housing, economics & livelihoods, etc.)
- We seed projects that nurture community engagement, and help people understand the issues
- Eventually, we will launch a community defined and community implemented, "Energy Descent Action Plan"
YORK IN TRANSITION STEERING GROUP
The Steering Group is evolving as the project develops. Our meetings are open. If you want to take a closer look at us or get involved in the work, then do come along to a meeting.
The next meeting of the Steering Group will be, 7:30pm on 12th August, at The Hansom Cab pub in Market Street, York.
YORK IN TRANSITION - THE COMPANY
York in Transition will be supported by a company - directors, bank account, and everything!
We're in the process of getting ourselves organised, and details of who the directors are, the aims of the company, and a copy of the minutes from the latest meeting can be found in our Business Pages.
GETTING INVOLVED:
Are you interested in helping? You could join the Steering Group or make a more informal contribution. Many of our projects want more people to help - eg to suggest their ideas and/or help with one-off events, people to write letters & articles for the local press, technical people to manage our databases, contacts etc.
You don't have to have prior experience, just a willingness to learn. It's a chance to brush up on old skills you haven't used in a while, or branch out into something new that will look good on your CV.
We hold regular skills shares on the 3rd Saturdays of the month at St Nicholas Fields. For instance we are looking for someone to teach knitting and mending. Do you have a skill you could teach?
If you want to organise, or help to organise, an event, Anna has oodles of experience and practical advice. She has won events grants for spending by April 2011. Anyone can ask the Steering Group for general York in Transition funding to support their idea. We have around £800 (June 2010). Contact Anna on 01904 654355 / 07891 989310.
