May 08 - Transition Wolverton kicked things off last week with screenings of End of Suburbia and Power of Community at the wonderful Madcap Arts Centre. Around 25 people came to each film and had plenty of reflections on how they felt after watching them. These included -

After EoS -

  • scared
  • glad to live in Wolverton
  • denial
  • opportunity
  • creativity
  • TESCO
  • wheelwrights & farriers
  • relevance to Milton Keynes
  • film wasn't hard hitting enough
  • preaching to the converted
  • don't be too earnest
  • links with war
  • what's the new version of reality the film talks about selling
  • hope

After PoC -

  • Inspirational
  • People are happy
  • Great music
  • It's true - I've been there
  • How can we learn more about what they're doing?
  • The film didn't mention the stock exchange - they [Cuba]don't have one.
  • We need an alternative economic system, and they [Cuba] are leading the way. Socialism is commonsense.
  • Aren't we going back to the things that our parents and grandparents knew?
  • It is giving dignity to the people who grow food
  • Could it happen here without some huge external shock?
  • We should do something before panic sets in
  • It needs political will - I don't see that in MK at the moment happening
  • New solutions, new ideas
  • The sustainable communities Act had all-party support. Lobby the Secretary of State for Justice to get things happening.

After watching PoC, people spent time chatting and eating cake whilst scribbling on big sheets of paper any questions the film had raised for them and any ideas of what issues and areas they thought the TTW group should focus on over the next six months. From great expanses of white, these were soon filled as ideas flowed and friendships formed. The steering group is now using this as a basis for putting together a programme of events, talks and workshops for the next six months.
