Following the screening of ‘Age of Stupid’ last November, The Brewhouse and the Taunton Transition Town group team up again on Tue 23rd March to bring you Food Inc a look under the rather disturbing lid of the American food industry to expose the highly mechanized underbelly of a system that puts profits before consumer health.

"You look at the labels and you see farmer this, farmer that. It's really just three of four companies that are controlling the meat. We've never had food companies this big and this powerful in our history."

- Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation

What's happening next?

Food Inc - Tue 23rd March

Following the screening of ‘Age of Stupid’ last November, The Brewhouse and the Taunton Transition Town group team up again on Tue 23rd March to bring you Food Inc a look under the rather disturbing lid of the American food industry to expose the highly mechanized underbelly of a system that puts profits before consumer health. Directed by Robert Kenner, it features interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore’s Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield’s Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms’ Joel Salatin. Food, Inc. reveals surprising—and often shocking truths—about what the US diet is really like, how it’s produced and what the future might hold.

Think it doesn’t happen over here too? Join in the post-film panel discussion to share your own views on how we feed ourselves now in the UK, and what we need to do to make our food supplies both sustainable and ethical into the future. Find out more about food co-ops, ‘People’s Supermarkets’, community supported agriculture schemes and more. Our local guest panelists will include Ian Tremain, Nuffield Farming Scholar; Tom Nielson, gardener, environmental designer and permaculturist; and Beth French, consumer representative on the Board of Taunton’s Farmers Market.

Starts 7.30pm. Tickets £5 from Brewhouse Box Office 01823 283244. All profits go to help the Brewhouse achieve it’s 10:10 pledge.

Make a difference to Taunton's CO2 emissions

Warm Streets

Taunton is part of the Warm Streets pilot scheme which will be running for a year.

This is an opportunity for us to make a real difference by reducing CO2 emissions and dependence on fossil fuels, and bringing these issues to the fore to save people loads of money.

Together with the Centre for Sustainable Energy, we will be spreading the word about subsidised loft and cavity wall insulation for householders. Taunton Transition Town is looking for a band of volunteers willing to give up just 2 hours a month to implement this in Taunton by

• telling your neighbours about the project

• talking to parents about the project at your child's school

• putting up posters in your neighbourhood

• leafletting

• emailing friends and contacts

• giving a talk about it at your local club or society

• holding a Warm Streets street party

• collecting and sharing stories of Warm Streets working well in your area to inspire others

And what's in it for us all? In return for referrals, the Centre for Sustainable Energy will

- run energy education workshops for our local primary schools

- carry out a feasibility study for a local micro renewables project in our area

- provide opportunities for group members to receive training through NEA’s City and Guilds in ‘Energy Awareness’ course

- deliver tailored training according to the groups needs, for example ‘Finding Funding for a Community Energy Project’

• provide access to support networks, stakeholders and other similar communities

• provide access to quality information and advice; for example on carbon saving measures, funding and training courses

• demonstrate tangible carbon savings and share our experiences with other people helping on the project

We may also get money towards helping create other sustainable energy projects in Taunton.

Our neighbouring Transition initiatives also have events open to all

SOURCE LOCAL, COOK LOCAL Recipe Book Project

This is an opportunity for interested people to produce a recipe book, and also any ideas for spin-off projects throughout the year that get people ‘cooking local’. The book will include a number of “guest chef” recipes from local chefs who ‘source local’. The first of these comes from Simon Beaumont of the Rendezvous Cafe, where our monthly drop-in meetings are held.
