Stroud Valleys Cycle Campaign now has a website

Alternatively you can contact Sheila Booth, Co-ordinator, on 01453 762233.

The Cycle Campaign have produced a cyclemap which colour codes routes according to their ease of riding / the experience required to cycle with confidence. It is available for £2.50 from the Tourist Infomation Office in the Sub Rooms, from Dennis Gould's stall in the Shambles Market, or from the SVCC itself.

The Group also has a newsletter, 'Uphill', which is available to members. A copy is also kept in the Reference Room of Stroud Library.

Past Events

bike film night 2: Climate Action, monday 10th september, the George room at the Sub rooms

"Leading scientists across the world agree that we have no longer than 10 years to prevent irreversible climatic changes with dramatic consequences for our planet. While politicians and business leaders remain comitted to profits and unlimited economic growth, it is necessary for individuals to come together to take the action required to avert catastophe."

The main film was 'Reclaim Power' - "Summer 2006: 600 people convinced that there is no time to waste set up a Camp for Climate Action. In the shadow of Drax coal-fired power station in Yorkshire - one of the biggest CO2 emitters in Europe - they held a 10 day space of collective learning, sustainable living and direct action". There were also short bike & climate related films and accounts of 2007's Heathrow camp

Saturday 16th June, Farmers Market Stall in Threadneedle Street, 8.30am-2pm

To start Bike Week we're hosting a stall where you can come and talk to us about cycling, whether your an avid cyclist or totally car-addicted, we'll hopefully have something of interest to say. We'll also be offering free basic bike checks (and some small repairs).

Monday 18th June, The Sub Rooms Café, 7-10.30pm Free / Donation

‘Bike Film Night’ -an evening of short films about cycling. The event also functioned as a launch night for Bicycology Stroud. The film ‘The Humble Magnificent’ (30 mins) explains a little about the group Bicycology: “The bike is a humble yet magnificent form of transport, and it symbolises a way of life that can be both fulfilling and sustainable. Bicycology is a grassroots collective who promote cycling as both a form of transport and a source of joy. This film follows their 2006 Roadshow, in which the group pedalled across England, teaching people how to fix their bikes, and discussing the things we can all do to help fix the planet”. The headline film, ‘World Naked Bike Ride’ (45 minutes) is a bit of fun. Narrated by Channel 4’s Jon Snow, it delves into a worldwide annual phenomenon, focussing on an event in London in 2005 “Hundreds of cyclists get naked and ride en masse through the streets, simultaneous with rides around the world. This is a film celebrating both the bike and the human body, protesting against oil dependency and climate change, and illustrating the vulnerability of cyclists on city-streets” Other short films about bikes, in particular, bike recycling projects, were also be shown.

Friday 22nd June, Intoductory Game of Bike Polo,

5pm-whenever! Stratford Park, near the skate ramps...

Bike Polo was invented in 1891, and has recently undergone a revival (particularly it's Punk Polo variant), and we're hoping to start up a team here in Stroud - to rival those in Oxford, Manchester and London (who are having a tournament in London when the Tour de France begins). Bring a bike, and a helmet if you like, and we'll bring the mallets, ball, and jumpers for goalposts!

Those interested can log on to www.bicycology.org.uk/stroud or email stroud@bicycology.org.uk.
