Welcome to Transition Town Lyons

We have joined together to explore ways to proactively respond to climate change, peak oil, and other economic and environmental challenges by creating a more engaged, resilient, healthy, sustainable, and connected community.

The Beginning

Lyons, Colorado was fortunate to host the Renaissance of Local Festival sponsored by Boulder Valley Going Local in September 2007. This educational and celebratory event featured speakers, workshops, and music and culminated with a slow food local feast on the world's longest banquet table (or so we'd like to think!) Many of our residents attended the weekend and some felt the inspiration for relocalization begin to grow...

On June 25, 2008 fifteen people gathered to hear a presentation given by Michael Brownlee as a part of the Green Heart Institute's Community Initiative (see http://lyons.greenheartcommunity.org). Michael's talk introduced those in attendance to the Transition Town Model, and during the discussion that followed it was clear that many in the group realized that Lyons was a perfect candidate.

Since then eight members have joined the founding Core Team and made their application to the Transition Town Network. On August 20, 2008 we received our "official" designation.

Meetings & Next Steps

On September 2, 2008 some of the Core Team met for the first time to take the very first steps for helping Lyons become more resilient and vibrant as it moves into an energy constrained future. We are working on an Awareness Raising film series with accompanying discussions to take place in October, and a few others are exploring the possibility of a Buy Local Campaign for the upcoming holiday season and beyond. Our next meeting will take place during the week of September 22nd.

Getting Involved

The scope of the vision for this endeavor, as well as its success, will be determined by the number of people who feel motivated and empowered to participate, so we welcome your involvement at whatever level you feel able. If you want to learn more or want to volunteer to be a part of this emerging initiative please email Jennifer White (jennifer@greenheartinstitute.org), with Transition Lyons in the Subject Heading.
