Garlic.

The easiest of all vegetables to grow is garlic –and the healthiest!

Any time between November and March, divide a garlic bulb into separate cloves and plant each clove 2 inches down with the pointy bit pointing upwards, 6 inches apart with a foot between rows (sorry, not decimal yet!).

Plant in full sun if possible, in rich soil (I have some home-made compost to give away but you’ll have to come and get it).

Keep the soil more or less free of weeds by continually moving it and in early summer they will sprout with what looks like spring onion leaves.

When the leaves turn yellow in late July/August, dig them up carefully and you’ll find that each clove has miraculously become a bulb. Dry your garlic in the sun for a week or so, bringing it indoors overnight, or in a warm, airy space, and hang them in bunches in a dry shed or similar.

You can repeat this process a few months later and ensure a continuous supply of organic garlic..

There is a variety especially for planting but greengrocer’s garlic does very well.

Happy gardening.
