Why Compost?

Compostable waste accounts for about a third of all household waste. By composting, we can dramatically reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. As waste sent to landfill is heavily taxed, by composting we can reduce the financial burden on our local council, freeing up resources for other services or helping to keep council tax down.

Compostable waste is made up of organic matter which, in landfill, can't break down properly due to the lack of oxygen. As a result, methane is produced, which is a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

Homemade compost is excellent food for plants and vegetables!

At the Project Day on Sunday 18 May 2008, a discussion took place on community composting. Tom Crone and Roisin Bond are keen to get a composting project off the ground very soon, so if you're interested in more information, contact them: tomcrone@hotmail.com roisin.bond@afsl.org.uk

The notes from the Project Day discussion will appear on this page very soon, and will be updated with news on the composting project once it is underway.
