Housing Open Space

Housing Lewes in an energy scarce future

Saturday 2nd June, Market Lane Garage, 10am til 4pm

Our second open space event was smaller than our first on food, but as one of the guiding principles of open space states: whoever comes are the right people.

Once most people had arrived, John opened the event, handing over to Una who explained how open space works and got the ball rolling. The theme for the day was:

how to reduce energy use in our homes and housing in Lewes

People wrote down things they would like to talk about, ideas, opportunities and offered to host a mini-conference on these topics. You did not need to be an expert in your chosen field, wanting to find out more on a subject you were curious or passionate about was enough to host a discussion.

The dicussions were timetabled and people signed up to attend. One principle of open space is the law of two feet: if you do not wish to stay at a talk for any reason you may go.

People who go from one discussion to another are known as bees and are encouraged acknowledging the value of cross-fertilisation. You do not even need to attend any talks: you can be a butterfly and sit on the side.

We had a break for a delicious lunch of local, organic food and the discussions continued.

At the end of the day, we came together in one large circle again and talked about things which struck us about the day and our next steps.

You will find summaries of all the discussions below, as well as the comments from the closing circle. This work will inform the Transition Town Lewes housing group. If you could like to get involved, click here.
