Business Group Principles

We try our best to work in the following way:

  • Initiatives:
    • We work on positive initiatives – those that lead towards a positive future and that are constructive (not destructive) in their nature.
    • We work on both short-term and long-term initiatives.
    • We are very keen on practical, as well as more theoretical, initiatives (like planning).
    • We identify, choose, start, nurture and assess initiatives.
  • Approach:
    • We facilitate the creation of solutions; we do not have to create all the solutions ourselves.
    • We work smart, not hard – that is, we leverage the few resources we have by intelligently applying them.
    • We work with the energy of business to create sustainable solutions.
    • We take action locally, while thinking globally (while a cliche this still seems relevant).
    • We attempt to change policy and behaviour – recognising that they can affect and alter each other.
    • We are not just a campaigning group – although we are not afraid to explain our beliefs to those who will listen, and we do try to educate and introduce new ways of looking at things, where appropriate.
    • We understand the importance of language and definitions in shaping the context for initiatives; this is often just as important at the initiatives themselves.
    • We try to keep an open mind and we are able to tolerate uncertainty and apparent contradiction while we try to resolve it.
    • In all our communication, and all our activities, we seek to be inclusive and accessible to all.
  • Working with others:
    • We work, first and foremost, with those companies and individuals who seek help and assistance; we are not trying to persuade or help anybody who is not seeking help!
    • Wherever possible we work with existing organisations and institutions – we have no desire to replace them.
    • As far as possible we keep aligned with the other TTL groups (including the 'Core' group) to avoid duplicating effort and to share resources.
  • Our group:
    • Individually, and as a group, we work on the things we enjoy, so that we do them well.
    • We are as inclusive as possible and constantly look to bring fresh blood into the business group.
    • We meet regularly, to review progress, and offer each other support.
    • We recognise the important role of personal and group dynamics in making progress.
    • Everybody in the group leads – leadership is a personal ability and choice.
    • We take things seriously when it's is appropriate, but we take things lightly and have fun too.
