TTL Arts Group: Vision and Objectives

The mission of the Transition Town Lewes (TTL) Arts Group is to create awareness of the vision and energy of Lewes Transition Town movement and through this facilitate action that brings about positive change. The Arts Group as with all the Transition Town Lewes groups will prepare an energy descent plan.

'Arts' covers the breadth of creative endeavour including contemporary visual art, fine art (sculpture, painting, drawing, film, etc) performing arts (music, theatre, dance, etc) and illustration, design, photography, crafts and literature. Projects could range from organising a TTL Festival to workingwith an artist to develop a map of local water sources or locally produced food, or developing a logo to brand Lewes originated products, and everything in between.

The Arts group aims to realise its vision by:

  • working with the other TTL groups to give artistic expression to their ideas and engage and inspire public action evolving existing ideas in interesting ways; for example, developing the book crossing scheme where people leave books they have read in public places for others to read and review.
  • working with leading creative practitioners from Lewes and beyond to produce projects that extend across the town and promote the TTL message to new and diverse audiences
  • encouraging local artists and arts organisations to develop their practice in more ethical ways, for example, by using sustainable and/or recycled materials and equipment, or using non-toxic paints and adhesives or using solar-powered lighting and heating at theatrical performances
  • encourage the culturally active to support local cultural initiatives instead of investing their interest elsewhere outside the town
  • building a database of local creative practitioners who will be kept in touch with TTL Arts Group initiatives as well as being invited to contribute toideas developed by the group

We are very keen to recruit new members to the Arts Group to help develop, plan and organise a programme of events and projects so please do come along to the next meeting on 8 November.

Recycle Your Read! From Thursday 25 October, various locations around Lewes.

Bookcrossing, the international book reading and recycling phenomenon comes to Lewes. Look out for environmentally themed books lying in the public spaces and places of the town and register their finding and your thoughts about the book at book crossing

Whales, Weather, Water and Waste Tuesday 13 November, Lewes Arms, 8:30pm, £2 per person.
