Could Japan Be Rich in Resources? Exploiting the 'Urban Mine' Effectively
Japan is generally regarded as a country with not many resources, particularly lacking in minerals and fossil fuels, and is considered dependant on imports for most of its supplies. Japan used to be capable of importing as many resources as necessary to sustain its industries, but the global resource situation is now changing rapidly.
These critical
challenges for Japan and other countries of the world are just now taking shape. We hope to continue monitoring related events and report back in our newsletters.

there is a report from next energy news that Las Vegas should have the first vertical farm by 2010 It is a $200 million project to make a 30 story building. They hope to generate $40 million per year. $25 million from produce and $15 million form tourists. However, no details about who is building it
Car park surfacing Rather than dig up the carparks wholesale an interim measure would be create porous surfaces: hard plastic meshes for grass and other greenery to grow through, as seen by motorways and so on. As Urban drainage becomes an increasing problem in towns because of hard paving over previously porous flood plains, this could be an intermediate apprach to car park surfaces, and a step closer to growing useful edible plants to replace car owenership.

First Localized Biogas Business Launched in Japan. Japan's first renewable energy supply venture in the gas business was jointly launched in September 2007 by restaurant company Aleph Inc. (based in Sapporo, Hokkaido), Kanematsu Corp. (based in Tokyo), electrical engineering company DAI-DAN Co. Carbon accounting for local business Patrick had the idea to ask Lewes accounting firms to provide companies with a 'carbon footprint' audit, as part of their annual accounts, based on the amount of electricity and gas they use, as a first step towards energy vulnerability auditing.
Edible trees in public places The dead sycamore at the corner of Waterloo Place and North Street has been taken down. I suggest a productive tree be planted in its place. Walnuts, for example, have the highest protein yield per acre of any other crop. Walnuts do well in Lewes: witness the mature trees in All Saints and Baxter's field. Just this evening my daughter and I scoffed wild plums on the Phoenix Bridge near Tesco. Lewes abounds with cherries, apples, figs, mulberries and even, apparently, a wild pomegranate. We are Natural Insulations a very small company selling natural insulations for the past 12 years. We have been involved in the environmental movement for more years than I care to remember! As yet we have been unable to start a transition town in our area but want to help people who have . The idea we have is to offer Warmcel 100 loft insulation made from recycled paper at a very discounted price to your group. Besides the obvious energy saving benefits the idea would have a community involvement because we are suggesting say we deliver one pallet load of 40 bags (which if people are topping up their existing insulation in a standard size house would be equivilent to 5/6 houses) which would be shared among your group. Or to encourage new members to your group you could offer the insulation to a part of Lewis or a few streets. There are many possibilities. This is a new scheme and if you are interested in taking this idea further then please make contact. Kitakyushu Starts Pilot Production of Ethanol from Food Waste In Kitakyushu City in southern Japan, a pilot plant to produce ethanol from food waste was established as a part of the city's Eco-Town project. The city started the collection of food waste from some hospitals, elementary schools, retailers and households in the city on June 11, 2007. http://www.japanfs.org/db/1884-e
Think global - transition local. Imagine if every town was a transition town and if the world's finances helped Lewes' transition happen at full speed? Seiyu Ltd, a major Japanese supermarket operator, launched a campaign in March 2007 to encourage customers to bring their own shopping bags by refunding 2 yen (about 2 US cents) to shoppers who use their own bag rather than a disposable bag provided by the store. Developer adopts green roofs on new and retrofitted buildings - Tosei Corporation, a Japanese real estate developer dealing in personal homes such as condominiums and houses as well as commercial facilities and office buildings, announced in June, 2006 a new policy under which it will install rooftop gardens using green panel-type units on all the properties it owns. I've just come back from Paris (by train of course), and the streets are full of the 10,000 bicycles recently introduced for anybody to use. OK you have to pay, but the point is that they are very popular and it has really transformed the feel of Paris. I believe Ken Livingstone is thinking of introducing them to London, What about Lewes? Tokyo plans to go Carbon Negative in 10 years - Tokyo sees the next three to four years as the start of a transition period toward a low-carbon society, and has committed itself to focus on implementing various measures strategically during this period. Convenience Store Chain Promotes Green Activities Lawson, Inc., a leading Japanese convenience store chain, started various new environmental activities in the spring of 2007.
