First meeting held 9th July 07

Discussed improvements to existing housing stock in Lewes and listed in order effective ways to reduce energy in housing:

A. Change to a green energy supplier.

B. Fit low energy light bulbs compact fluorescent or LED.

C. Consider all appliances in the home such as the need for a dish washer and tumble dryer or the energy efficiency of fridges and freezers.

D. Fit loft and cavity wall insulation where ever possible. Seek advice form the council for grants and types of insulation.

E. Fit solar hot water panels. See Heat more Greens.

F. Consider under floor heating instead of radiators where possible and using solar hot water heating for energy supply.

Discussed building materials:

A. Locally sourced organic material – sweet chestnut from coppiced woods.

B. Recycle waste materials to use for building – newspaper for insulation.

C. Hemp and flax.

D. Environmentally friendly paints.

Discussed water use and rain water harvesting to supply grey water to houses. This would reduce water rates costs for those on a meter over time.

It was noted that some items could cross over into work that the energy group was undertaking. Perhaps the Housing Group should concentrate on making housing energy efficient while the Energy Group concentrates on the supply of energy!
