Reskilling

One of the main ideas that underpins the Transition approach is the need for a "Great Reskilling". By this we mean that we think that people will need to recapture many of the practical skills that former generations took for granted, so that we're better equipped to manage a shift towards a more localised and less resource-intensive way of life.

This means things like: growing fruit and vegetables; building and repairing homes using natural materials; cooking using fresh, seasonal ingredients; preserving food; repairing clothing; and many more...

It also means developing the kind of people-skills that will be increasingly important as our lives are more rooted in our local communities. By this we mean skills like consensus decision making, mediation and conflict resolution - which are all rooted in a strong sense of empathy and a willingness to see issues from another person's perspective.

Reskilling group

We don't have a Reskilling group running at present, so if you feel interested in setting one up, then let us know, and we'll do what we can to support you.

Skillshare events are also a really great practical thing that we'd love to see happen in Leicester - so get in touch if you feel you have skills to offer, or if you fancy making some skillshare events happen.

In 2008 we had a group that were inspired to get together under the reskiling banner, that met to share skills in domestic crafts, such as knitting and sewing. You can read some short notes from their October meeting here and their November meeting here.
