Welcome to the Transition Leicester website!
What is Transition Leicester?
Transition Leicester is a local response to the challenges of climate change and peak oil. We're part of a rapidly growing network of Transition initiatives in the UK and around the world.
We are a growing network of local people looking to take action to inspire our community to make a transition towards a positive and truly sustainable future.
Our awareness of climate change and peak oil gives us two important goals:
- greatly reducing Leicester’s carbon emissions, so the city contributes its share of the global effort to help avoid dangerous climate change
- improving the city’s resilience, so that we are able to provide for our core needs – like food, energy, entertainment and transportation – even if prices of fossil fuels (on which our current infrastructure relies) substantially increase.
One of the main ways we'll try to do this is by working to create a positive vision of a future Leicester where we meet our energy needs without using fossil fuels.
We think that a fossil-fuel-free Leicester could be a vibrant, abundant, wonderful community in which to live, and we'd like to inspire the people of Leicester to work towards that vision.
Forthcoming activities and events:

11th/12th and 18th/19th July 2009: Leicester Open Eco Houses weekends. A chance to visit some inspiring homes of different types and ages with many eco features, in and around Leicester. Find practical and inspiring ideas on how to make your home warmer, brighter, healthier, cheaper to run and ready for the climate change century. From a small terrace to large detached houses and a narrow boat, learn from the home owners themselves about solar water heating, photo-voltaic panels, dry lining, permaculture gardening, woodstoves, eco- building and more! For full details or to book a visit send an email to: info AT transitionleicester.org.uk or phone Louise on 0116 267 7007 after the 29th June.
3rd September 2009: Talk at Leicester Veggie and Vegan society meeting.
Around 22nd September 2009: My special bike! To celebrate car-free day in September 2009, Transition Leicester are looking to organise a short celebratory bike ride around Leicester city centre to showcase some of the less well-known ways that you can meet your transport needs in the city using pedal power. Interested in taking part, telling us the story of what you do with your bike, or helping to make the event happen? (It’s volunteer-run and we’ll need help!) Then get in touch with Andrew Reeves on reevesie AT gmail.com or call 07848 007786.
31st October 2009: We're making ambitious plans for a big Apple Day, which will take place at the Friends Meeting House on Queens Road on 31st October this year. Read about our ideas for the day, contribute ideas of your own and get involved by taking a look here.
