Getting Involved

You want to get involved with Transition Leicester? That's great! Your efforts will be greatly appreciated, and what's more - you should have a lot of fun into the bargain.

To try and make it easy for new people to get involved, we have a "matchmaker", Louise Hall, who you can contact to share your thoughts on how you'd like to get involved and to hear about what help or roles we've identified that we could use help with. You can contact Louise on louisemhall AT ntlworld.com or by calling 0116 2677007. To find out more about help we need with specific tasks or roles, check out the Volunteering page on our website.

On this page we've also listed lots of other ideas for how you could get involved. Do get in touch if you have ideas for involvement that we haven't covered here, or if you have more questions: info AT transitionleicester.org.uk is the email address. We think every contribution to this process is valuable, whether it's an ongoing commitment to a Transition group or a one-off bit of help with an event, so we hope that we can offer a way of getting involved that suits everyone.

We look forward to seeing you!

Ideas...

  • Come to an event
    • Check out the Events page for what's coming up, and come along to something that takes your fancy! Our Cafe events take place every month, and are a great chance to informally get to know people involved in Transition in Leicester, and talk about what contribution you'd like to make.
  • Check out the Volunteering page for tasks that need doing.
  • Join/start/help out with a group.
    • At present we have several groups and projects at work (though more will form in time). If you're interested in being part of one of these groups or projects then check out the appropriate page on our website to see when the next meeting is taking place, or get in touch with us to find out more.
    • If you're interested in starting a new group (whether it's about an issue or focussing on your local neighbourhood) drop us a line to talk about it. We can put you in touch with other people who've shown an interest in a group on that issue or who live in your area. For an issue-based group, the chances are that one of the first steps would be to organise an event to draw out lots of other people who are also interested, so the group could develop out of that.
  • Organise an event.
    • Have you got an idea for an event you'd like to happen? A film showing at your local community centre? A day of workshops about Peak Oil? A festival of 100% local and carbon neutral fun activities? A skill you'd like to share? If you want to organise something under the Transition banner, then you're invited to do so!
    • We've also got loads of ideas waiting in the wings for events that we'd love to do but haven't found time so far to organise - we can provide ideas if you've got the initiative!
  • Organise a film showing and discussion
    • We can lend out DVDs (End of Suburbia, Power of Community, A Convenient Truth, and many more..) if you want to organise a film showing (see here). This could be anything from inviting some friends over to your house, to putting on a film in your local community centre, to booking a cinema and inviting everyone!
  • Invite us over to give a talk.
    • We're keen to give talks about Transition to anyone who'd like to hear from us. This could mean anything from workplaces/schools/mosques to inviting some friends around to your house or the park and having us talk to a small group there. We'd love to meet up and have a conversation about what the ideas behind Transition could mean for different organisations and people in our community.
  • Donate us some money.
    • We're entirely volunteer-run so donations are really useful for covering printing costs, stall costs, room bookings and the like. If you'd like to support us by donating some money to the cause, we'd be really grateful. Drop us a line at info [at] transitionleicester.org.uk and we can pass on our bank account details, or you can donate to us at one of our events.
  • Spread the word.
    • One of our main aims at the moment is simply awareness raising. This is something we can all do by just talking to our friends and colleagues about Peak Oil and Climate Change, and exploring what we should be doing to respond to these challenges.
  • Learn more.
    • Check out some of the links on our website, or check out some books from the Transition library and learn more about the Transition process and about Peak Oil and Climate Change. Then tell your friends and family!
