Welcome to the Transition Leicester website!

What is Transition Leicester?

Transition Leicester is a local response to the challenges of climate change and peak oil. It is part of a rapidly growing network of Transition initiatives in the UK and around the world.

We have two main goals:

  • greatly reducing Leicester’s carbon emissions, so the city contributes its share of the global effort to help avoid dangerous climate change
  • improving the city’s resilience, so that we are able to provide for our core needs – like food, energy, entertainment and transportation – even if prices of fossil fuels (on which our current infrastructure relies) substantially increase.

We also have another very important goal – to create a vision of a future Leicester where we meet our energy needs without using fossil fuels as a vibrant, abundant, wonderful community in which to live, and to inspire the people of Leicester to work towards that vision.

Forthcoming activities:

30th July: Food Group Meeting - Phoenix Arts Cafe, 7pm

6th August: Heart and Soul group meeting

30th August: stall at Watermead Family Discovery Day

8th September: An event focussing on what Transition means for cities and in particular, on what can be done on the level of local neighbourhoods. Sarah Pugh from Transition Bristol will give a talk, and will let us know what has happened so far in Bristol, which became the first official Transition city in early 2007. More details to come soon.

9th September: One day Transition speaker training course

28th October: talk at Cafe Equitable, Leicester
