Dec 09 - Green Community Plan : TTK held a meeting on 15 Dec 2009 in partnership with Creative Environmental Networks (CEN) to establish a “Green Community” Energy Action Plan. Through this plan, we envisage identifying and delivering projects supported by CEN and with resources from the Energy Saving Trust to assist Kingston residents to reduce their impact on the environment and to reduce their energy bills. TTK will be central to the success of the projects through the facilitation of networking and maximising community awareness.
The meeting generated an initial grouping of project ideas based on the suggestions of TTK and CEN members. The initial project themes are:
• home energy efficiency; • reclamation of green spaces; • partnerships with local businesses, and; • education and community awareness raising.
A series of follow-on sessions between TTK and CEN during January-April 2010 will finalise the projects and will prepare them for delivery in our community. The Energy Saving Trust will provide guidance on how to achieve our project goals, including advice on project funding and grants resources. A copy of the action plan is available for download by clicking here: http://transitiontowns.org/uploads/Kingston-upon-Thames/Greencommunityplan.pdf
Interested TTK members are encouraged provide additional ideas, or join the effort. Persons can contact Christopher Thomas via email at cpthomas13@gmail.com, or Martin Birley at martin.birley@talk21.com
Dec 09 - Project CHARM : Also of note at the meeting on the 15th, we were introduced to Dr.Ruth Rettie and Dr. Kevin Burchell, of Kingston University’s School of Business. Ruth and Kevin are managing Project CHARM (http://business.kingston.ac.uk/charm) which will investigate whether social and behavioural ‘norms’ concerning energy use and conservation can be influenced. The researchers hope to study the habits and behaviours are a large sample “community” within Kingston Borough. It is hoped that TTK can play an active role in the project helping to identify and work with the project community.
Nov 09 - Greening Business : Read a report of our "Greening Business" evening in November at http://transitiontowns.org/uploads/Kingston-upon-Thames/greeningbusiness.pdf.
Sept 09 - Working towards Transition : John Breach, a member of TTK’s Media Group for the past year, has just completed his MSc Thesis “Working Towards Transition”, looking at how whole the movement can better recruit and motivate active members. Most of his research was conducted within TTK, including in-depth interviews with 9 members. John presented a summary of the results to a special TTK meeting on 10th September. link to article
