Introduction to Transition Town Hervey Bay

Transition Town Hervey Bay is all about preparing Hervey Bay for the future taking into consideration climate change and peak oil.

Transition Towns are popping up all over the world and we are amongst the first in Australia. Other initiatives near us are Bundaberg, to the North, called SustainaBundy http://www.relocalize.net/groups/sustainabundy and to the south the Sunshine Coast initiative, called SEAC http://www.seac.net.au/main/

Our home site is: http://www.transitiontowns.org/ from this page you can access the Transition Initiatives Primer which is the document that we are working from.

As there are very many groups and individuals in Hervey Bay already working towards a more sustainable future, part of our role will be to act as a communication hub focusing everyone’s efforts. The intention is to have links on our site to the groups in Hervey Bay that are participating and a schedule of their activities and events that they have planned.

Another part of our role will be to make information available to people on what can be done to address the serious issues of peak oil and climate change. So many people are unaware of the complexities of peak oil. For example chemical fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides are all derived from oil and gas. Subsequently peak oil will have a devastating effect on world food production.

One of the main aims is to work with the community and Council to create an Energy Descent Action Plan (EDAP) for Hervey Bay. We hope that many people will become involved with this.

Transition Initiatives are based on four key assumptions:

• That life with dramatically lower energy consumption is inevitable, and that it’s better to plan for it than to be taken by surprise.

• That our settlements and communities presently lack the resilience to enable them to weather the severe energy shocks that will accompany peak oil.

• That we have to act collectively, and we have to act now.

• That by unleashing the collective genius of those around us to creatively and proactively design our energy descent, we can build ways of living that are more connected, more enriching and that recognise the biological limits of our planet.

We have set a goal of reaching 12% of our population, that’s about 6,000 people, so if you are a resident of the Hervey Bay area and would like to receive updates from TTHB, send your e-mail address and help us to reach our goal.
