Hands on Harborough – Environmental group

Last night on the 26th November 2007 I attended the council initiated “Hands on Harborough” environmental group in the council chambers at 7.30, well I was not there at 7.30 due to playing football but after running home and having a quick shower I was there.

Annie from Harborough FOE was also invited to attend and had obviously had made her presentation before I arrived at 8.15. There was some discussion about a new officer joining HDC on the environmental side of things, traffic lights on Coventry road by the Spar and of lockable cages at the train station for commuters that cycle.

I was asked to give an introduction about the “Transition Town” initiative and to out line its drivers and aspirations which they group collectively seemed to buy into. They did press to ask what actions we are actually taking at the moment but I explained that we are here at the moment only to raise awareness and again they pressed to example projects.

I outlined what other groups have done around the country with the CSA farms, Industrial and provident renewable power companies, the nut capital, virtual orchards and tree plantings. I then supplemented this with some of our ideas such as the Orchard at the rear of Newcombe street which did raise further interest.

All in all it was a good meeting if only to explain what we are doing and hopefully the two groups will be able to work hand in hand.

I was not formally introduced to every one but the list of those present goes as follows.

Mary – Chair person Rachel Lusby – Secretary and deputy editor of the Harborough Mail Robin Totten – Harborough cycling exponent (can’t remember the group) Steve ? – Harborough Rail users group Annie Moelen-Hughs – Harborough FOE Two other chap, one I was introduced to whose name begins with J and one not that I was not introduced to. I will update this bit when the minutes of that meeting comes through.

Next meeting on Jan 28th, 7.30pm in the council chambers again.

Best regards

Darren
