On 28th November Andrew Reevsie of the fledgling "Transition Leicester" group emailed to say that the new movie "A crude awakening" was being shown at the Phoenix Arts centre in Leicester.
Mark Baverstock and myself decided to attend as much to meet the TT Leicester guys as to see the film.
The film was everything that I hoped that it would be and the narrative was very compelling with some vivid imagery of the now defunct oil fields at Baku in Azerbaijan and ones in Texas and Venezuela.
The back ground history of the Baku field was interesting to hear and was new to me. The speakers were very good although the token "Peak oil, Nay sayer" was a rather bizzar looking, bow tie wearing Italian. I also wondered what a proffessor in Nanotechnology would be commenting on 'Peak Oil' for but the quality of the other interviewee's was excellent.
Having read the film's web site it is a shame that none of the current political officers could arrange their calendar well enough to be interviewed.
This film is a must have I think to show as part of the promotional/educational phase of any 'Transition town' project.
After the film we had a good chat with a couple of the TT'ers and might be popping over to their next steering group meeting.
If it had not been for the efforts of the TT Leicester group the cinema would have been empty due to a complete lack of promotion by the Pheonix arts centre, as it was I would guess that there were 25 or so people in attendance.
