Transition Glastonbury is a loosely structured network of local people connected to a regional ,national and international network of ‘Transition’ villages towns and cities. Our aim is to support the transition from the ‘industrial growth society’ we currently live in to a ‘life sustaining’ community.

Transition Glastonbury seeks to engage our whole community in finding and implementing practical alternatives to our fossil-fuelled and energy intense lifestyles. We are a broad coalition seeking to work in partnership with individuals, local groups, businesses and our Town, District & County Councils. Our aim is to re-localise our town, making it vibrant, resilient and truly sustainable.

We do this by:

• Recognising different areas of interest that relate to transition e.g Food (e.g: community gardens, Community supported agriculture,re-skilling in learning to grow food, encouraging people to buy locally produced produce) Health (e.g: re-skilling in self care- herbal medicine, diet etc), Turning Rubbish to Resources(e.g:re-using rubbish by turning into useful things) , Buildings and Energy (e.g: eco-housing, co-housing, renewables, saving money on your energy bills) and Heart and Soul- (e.g: growing strong community through building healthy relationships & partnerships, exploring the sacred).

The work we do involves:

Networking – celebrating what people and local organisations are already doing. Bringing people together. Forming partnerships to develop specific projects e.g by identifying gaps – areas that need attention and bringing together the local people who might contribute to a solution.

• Using our network to promote what everyone else is doing as well as our own events. Growing our mailing list so this is more effective.

• Doing this through a newsletter which is online and printed and distributed through outlets in the town with occasional updates by email newsletter.

Organising our own events – and taking part in other peoples events

Meeting regularly – celebrating together and strengthening community through this.

Things happen in Transition Glastonbury when there is a critical mass involving enough people to make something happen and enough enthusiasm & the skills & resources to create a gathering or a newsletter or whatever project we might like to dream up. We aim to empower people to jump in and take part and to support people in becoming active. We recognise there is a natural ebb and flow of creativity, activity and time for reflection, gathering feedback and resting. At times not much is visibly happening and at times there’s lots happening. We are in this for the long haul and value each part of this cycle.

We welcome you to look around this site, get in touch, try a meeting or join one of our projects!
