Steps We Can Take
Compiled from participants at Power Of Community film on Monday 25th June 2007
One Step I Can Take
A Forest Row market where everyone can sell their extra produce
Use cloth bags
Say hello to strangers
Walk more and not feel vulnerable or frightened (feel reinforced!)
Fix up and use my bike
Use my bike more and car less - share rides
Use bike instead of car for trips to East Grinstead
Reduce my speed!
Keep to or below the speed limit!
Electric milk floats
I can offer an electric bike to our MP & try and get the Courier to report on it
Start spreading the word 'Forest Row Transition Village': posters, supported signs in shops, badges etc
Share knowledge & information, bring it into my work and teaching.
I've already decided - I'm going to look out a bio dynamic farming gardening short course at Emerson
Set examples for the children
Grow veggies - without slugs! (I always start out in February but in June I am distracted!
Run a Permaculture Course & program of sessions on sustainability, particularly the strategy aspects.
Make sure your (my?) pension fund is invested in a sustainable and responsible manner.
Sprouting my own alfalfa seeds and growing salad in a bowl
One Step Forest Row Can Take
More cycle paths (I like cycling but it's far too scary!) eg cycle path from village to Plaw Hatch
Bike more
Create a 'cycle priority' zone throughout the village eg max car speed 10mph (as in Home Zones)
Pedestrianise parts of the village centre
Reduce light pollution
Boycott Tescos - Shop locally
Don't go to Tesco
Reinforce positive moves
A day especially for all gardeners to get together - allotment renters & people who use their gardens & people who work growing veg. Just to talk and network.
Promote car sharing or even mini bus to EG station at rush hours
Make bus stops into 'car stops' too, with special signs to encourage car sharing
Give lifts - and don't e afraid... (Try to have a community system which can reduce/eliminate fear of this)
Turn of lights on public buildings when closed
Exchange skills for free
Improved bus service (including a bus service for the many cars dropping off at Michael Hall school daily)
Tablehurst Farm provide community allotment spaces for people in Forest Row (council allotment waiting list so full as there is no land)
Establish a Forest Row Development Trust to create an economically independent vehicle to coordinate, implement, educate, make things happen.
To support the move to phase out plastic bags using cotton bags instead
Use Cotton bags for shopping - ditch the plastic bag
Street party to celebrate Transition!
One Step Local Government Can Take
Ditch the relief road
Look at Lewes District Council grant system
Promote a free stuff/goods/services event day to kick start the village web site
Speed up allotment allocation
Set up Permaculture Initiative
Speed cameras, speed restrictions (less accidents) = reduced fuel consumption
Stop promoting wasteful & unnecessary street lighting
Liaise with Hoathley Hill Biodyamic land purchase initiative & consider purchase of local land coop space
Fund and/or transfer assets to help establish a Forest Row Development Trust
Make recycling a micro business so that it funds the local economy & keeps resources local
Provide a bus for commuters to the station
Cheaper bus fares
Promote phasing out of plastic bags
Invest lots more in sustainable development
