Mitigate the Effects of Climate Change and Peak Oil:
reduce your energy use
Follow this simple 11 point checklist as a start:
- Calculate your carbon footprint on the Energy Saving Trust website at: http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/calculator/start
- Turn your thermostat down. Reducing your room temperature by 1 °C could cut your heating bills by up to 10%. You could save around £50 per year.
- Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows. Insulating your home is one of the most effective ways of improving the energy efficiency of your home. For example, insulating an uninsulated loft can save around £155 and around one tonne of carbon dioxide a year.
- Always turn off the lights when you leave a room, don't leave appliances on standby or on charge unnecessarily and unplug all electrical equipment from the wall (even when switched off appliances will use a small amount of electricity if plugged in).
- Only boil as much water as you need (but remember to cover the elements if you're using an electric kettle).
- A dripping hot water tap wastes energy and in one week wastes enough hot water to fill half a bath, so fix leaking taps and make sure they're fully turned off!
- Use energy saving lightbulbs. They last up to 10 times longer than ordinary bulbs, and using one can save you around £40 over the lifetime of the bulb. Remember to dispose of them carefully (not in the bin) though.
- Get a home energy check on the Energy Saving Trust website at http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/proxy/view/full/165/homeenergycheck and you could save up to £270 a year on your house hold energy bills.
- Consider generating some of your own energy. Find out more at: http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/generate_your_own_energy
- Walk or use public transport whenever possible (http://www.travelcoventry.co.uk/ and http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/), consider a more energy efficient car and think about how to cut down on your need to travel.
