Trees for Chester

Trees for Chester is a working group looking at planting fruit and nut trees on publically accessible land, as a way of providing a free and self managing food source in the future, while also raising public awareness of the issues around peak oil, climate change and the economic downturn.

Its activities will be threefold: first, it will acquire and distribute a variety of young food-producing trees to several local public and charitable organisations. Second, it will begin to propagate food-producing trees. Seeds for this stage have already been collected, propagation space has already been donated, and we are fortunate to have the involvement of a local agro-forestry expert. Third, it will seek to inspire further involvement by the local community and businesses and to share knowledge of tree foods, tree propagation and care skills with voluntary ‘tree guardians’, thus enabling the project to expand and to become self-sustaining.

UPDATE - April 2010

What we have achieved ...

  • 20 semi dwarfing apple rootstock were bought and potted up for a future grafting workshop.
  • 12 one-year goji plants have been potted up. 9 of these are for sale at a future transition event.
  • 30 autumn raspberries were planted with manure at St Mary's Primary School in Handbridge.
  • 1 pear and 3 blackcurrants were planted at Lache Primary School.
  • 2 apples were planted at St Clare's Primary in Lache.
  • 15 cherry, plum and apple trees were given to the Lache Garden Project and are being planted in specially constructed raised beds by Bob and his hard working team.

A lot of fun was had during the planting.

The vision for the future ...

... to give plants away on the condition that those people who look after them, take cuttings and grow those on with the intention of giving them away to another person who will perpetuate the cycle.
