Transport emissions are most rapidly growing source of atmospheric carbon due primarily to exponentially increasing levels of private car ownership in places like China and India. Couple this with dwindling oil reserves and we have a very significant problem, particularly when Australia is so heavily reliant on fossil fuelled heavy transport. Rather than buying into the doom and gloom and sinking into despair, the Sustainable Living Armidale Transport Group aims to deliver innovative transport alternatives and to break down the barriers that people perceive to the use of more sustainable existing forms of transport. Positive solutions must be developed in wealthy nations like Australia if we are to have any chance of influencing the decisions of consumers in developing nations like China and India and reducing the potential magnitude of future climate change.
Some of the potential projects that the group has been discussing include:
An offsets scheme focused on providing Armidalians with a range of locally delivered projects which customers can choose to support to offset the impacts of their travel and petrol usage, providing a wide range of environmental (e.g. environmental restoration, biodiversity or alternative energy) outcomes in addition to carbon sequestration;
An electric vehicle recharging station in a high profile location;
An education campaign focusing on breaking down the cultural barriers to alternative forms of transport amongst various sections of the community; and
Public events such as a regular Bike to University day.
