Armidale Local Food (ALF)
Next Meeting: 27th June, 12 noon, Armidale Community Centre, Alexander St, Armidale (Off Niagara St just north of the Girraween roundabout).
We try to keep the business meeting to one hour and then people can stay and socialise longer if they wish. In the latter case, bring a plate to share.

This was originally envisaged as a way of locating fruit and nut trees in Armidale that are either growing on unoccupied land, or are unable to be looked after by their owners. We plan to then organise for them to be looked after and harvested each year. The harvest could then be split between the gleaners and the owner, or distributed in other ways.
There are many such trees in Armidale and it seems such a waste to see them go unharvested. Many of them can also be sources of disease if they are not managed to control pests such as fruit fly and codling moth.
However, there is no reason that this approach cannot be used for other resources that are around. For example, our first offer was for horse dung that an SLA member doesn't want left on her paddock - see the GRATEFUL GLEANERS page.
So if you have, or know of, a fruit or nut tree in need of care, or any other resource that you would be willing to donate or share with others, please contact Jane - jane[AT]livinlightly.com.au 67722980.

Armidale Local Food had its first meeting on Saturday 9th August 2008. We started developing our vision for 2020 and decided upon three projects we would work towards.
The Homegrown Harvest Festival will be held in March 2009 and will involve a banquet using almost entirely local grown produce. For more information email ray.south@gmail.com
The Armidale Home-grown Garden Tour was held on 7-8th March 2009. It focused on a number of homes with food-producing gardens within Armidale's town boundary. The tour attracted an estimated 250 people and was very popular and enjoyable. For more information email jane[AT]livinlightly.com.au Download flyer
The Perennial Food Garden will be a planting of perennial food-producing plants, such as nut trees, in a public space in Armidale. The idea is to show what food might be grown in public spaces in Armidale.
